Bonzer Leads to Successful Catering Operation at The Royal Bournemouth Hospital

Bonzer Leads to Successful Catering Operation at

The Royal Bournemouth Hospital

Following consecutive years as a 3-star performing trust, The Royal Bournemouth Hospital gained NHS Foundation Status in 2005.  Located on the outskirts of the town, it is a modern facility that provides health care for the residents of Bournemouth, Christchurch, East Dorset and part of the New Forest.  The 650-bed unit boasts full facilities including a 24-hour emergency department which admits over 60’000 patients a year.

Such an operation requires a catering facility that is up to the task and under the watchful eye of Catering Manager, Terry Reeve, The Royal Bournemouth has exactly that.  Producing over 2200 meals a day to cater for both the patients and staff, the kitchen is a constant hive of activity, with a team of 68 staff.

In addition to the conventional cook/serve style patient catering, Terry also oversees the onsite deli-bar, tea-bar and staff dining room.  Despite a move to more fresh and frozen ingredients, one area that continually caused Terry problems was with regards to the opening of cans.

“We open over 1300 cans every month so if the can opener develops a problem, we develop a problem with the catering.  Our previous opener would sometimes require the blade to be changed after every 40 cans, that’s almost every day.  More concerning was that if the user put the blade on slightly skewed, shards of metal could also find their way into the food.  I knew we had do something, and fast.”

When Terry was at a local trade exhibition, he was introduced to the Bonzer Titanium, at which point he realised that he had just solved all his problems.

“When I purchase equipment it is about getting the right tool for the right job.  The Bonzer Titan is exactly that.  It has a quick release blade system, meaning that changing the blade it is a fast, simple job that can be completed without the need for us to call estate management.  Secondly, there is only one way to put the blade in, therefore it is always straight and eradicates any danger of metal shards entering the food.  Finally, the entire open process is quicker and cuts down on labour.  With our last opener it could take fourteen turns to open an A10 can, with the Bonzer Titanium it takes just seven thanks to its larger handle and 40mm cog wheel.  On 1300 cans this equates to serious time and labour savings.”

The quick release blade system, as well as the shaft, is placed through the dishwasher each evening, to ensure that any build up during the day is eradicated immediately.

“Surprisingly, the blade area on normal can openers harbours a significant amount of dirt, and residue build up, which can only properly be removed by changing the blade. The quick release system allows us to place the entire system in the dishwasher at the end of each day to eradicate any problem before it has begun.”

To fit in with the hospitals environmental policy, all the tin cans are recycled, after washing, therefore it is important for Terry that the opener does not leave a sharp edge on the cans.  In addition, the fact that Bonzer is made in Britain, fits perfectly with the trusts commitment to support the national economy.

“Our intention is always to support the national economy wherever possible, and therefore Bonzer fits perfectly with this.  The 5 year warranty also gives us the reassurance that if the product does ever go wrong, there is a support system in place to ensure that we will have a replacement immediately.”

After spending 35 years in the NHS, 12 of which have been at The Royal Bournemouth, Terry appreciates that there is a necessity to look at the whole life costs of the equipment.

“Buying on price is a false economy.  You need to look at how long you want the equipment to last - Nowadays I would always specify Bonzer – buying on price is a false economy in the long run.

Bonzer Dispensers Lift the Cup…

Bonzer Dispensers Lift the Cup…

The new range of Bonzer Cup Dispensers from Mitchell & Cooper are the perfect way to remove clutter from the service counter, whilst helping to prevent wastage and improve hygiene.  Made from high quality food grade stainless steel and designed and manufactured in the UK, the new dispensers can be wall mounted (Gravity Series) or recessed directly into the counter (Elevator Series).

Featuring a one-cup release mechanism, which helps to eradicate wastage, the dispenser feeds the bottom of the cup first, thereby preventing contamination of the cup rim, and removing the threat of tampering.

Helping to create important space around the counter, it facilitates an ergonomically sound service area, to ensure that the barista or operator is as efficient as possible, especially during busy times.

All of the dispensers are compatible with foam, paper or plastic cups and are available in four sizes to cater for cup diameters from 69mm right through to 98mm.  In addition to the standard 600mm length tube, which will hold up to xx cups, the dispensers can also be manufactured to a bespoke size.

For ultimate personalisation the wall-mounted tubes can also be branded to feature the name of the outlet, chain or drinks brand.  Each dispenser comes with a 2 Year guarantee and because of its UK origins has readily accessible spares, should a problem ever arise.

How to Choose the Right Can Opener for your Kitchen

Canned food is one of life’s first and greatest conveniences and no more so than in a high volume kitchen.  But you also need a can opener that is fit for the job.

Mitchell & Cooper, who are UK manufacturers of the iconic Bonzer® can opener, suggest considering firstly the number of cans you need to open every day:  the more cans, the bigger, more robust model you need*.  Also consider the size of cans you open, as this will determine the shaft length.**

Quality and durability of the blade and cutting mechanism are extremely important, as poor quality blades will cease to cut cleanly after a short time and you will run the risk of contaminating your food with tiny shards of metal, known as swarf.  All Bonzer® can openers are designed not to produce swarf.

But your can opener is only going to perform well if it is regularly cleaned and maintained. Table top can openers are well known to EHOs as dirt traps, often because it is difficult to remove the cutting mechanism for a thorough cleaning or to change the blades.  Mitchell & Cooper have surmounted this problem by fitting Bonzers® with a quick release blade carrier making it much easier to clean and change parts, the only can opener in the world to do so.

Although the name Bonzer® is often applied generically to any table top can opener, authentic Bonzers® are distinguishable by the red knob on the handle.  They have been in production since the 1940’s but the design is being constantly updated to meet the demands of contemporary catering.   The latest features to be added are a dishwasher friendly blade and cutting mechanism and blades with an anti-bacterial coating.

Visit www.bonzer.co.uk or call Mitchell & Cooper on 01825 765511 for more information and to find out if your Bonzer® is authentic.

Can Opener problems solved – Follow up

Friends

We are able to inform you that since our offer went out 5 weeks ago with the exchange scheme we have had orders for 537 Standard Can openers.

This is a substantial number. The level of concern in the market place over this issue is high. In response we have increased the offer to 2000 and are now looking at how we may sustain an offer overseas for properly and competently UK manufactured Can Openers.

With the launch of our new catalogue and new products, with the associated frenetic activity we have had little time to contact our scrap merchants to establish how much you will be giving to the Great Ormond Street Childrens’ cancer charity but would hope to do this shortly when the deluge abates.

Many thanks for all of your support.

Can opener problems? – Solved.

The problem

We have received complaints from third parties regarding the quality and safety of industrial bench-top can openers which look very similar to our Bonzer® can openers (our Standard Bonzer® model is pictured below). We were contacted because they wrongly believed that the similar looking can openers originated from Mitchell & Cooper.

Of concern to us is that they had experienced higher than normal levels of swarf (metal shards) while operating the similar looking can openers.

The fact that  third parties have been confused into believing that the similar looking can openers originate from Mitchell and Cooper represents a serious threat to our business and good name and also the potential health and safety of our customers and/or those they are responsible for.

Accordingly, we want to take decisive action.

EXCHANGE SCHEME

We are prepared to exchange 1,000 genuine Bonzer® can openers for 1,000 Qualifying Can Openers. A genuine Bonzer® can opener can be easily identified by its distinctive red knob with the Bonzer in-print which has been used since the late 1970s.

For each can opener which we "exchange", we will give a 25% discount on the current retail price off the equivalent Bonzer® can opener. In addition, we will further reduce the retail price by deducting the price you paid for Qualifying Can Opener. A great deal, especially as you will also be entitled to the 10 year warranty afforded on all Bonzer® Can openers also. VAT, postage and packaging will be additional.

All Qualifying Can Openers we receive under this exchange scheme will be sold for scrap, with the monies received being donated to The Great Ormond Street Hospital Childrens’ Charity. The amount raised by this scheme will be published regularly on this Blog.

For the purposes of this scheme “Qualifying Can Opener” means a non - Bonzer® industrial bench top can opener of a similar appearance to our  Bonzer® models.

What you need to do:-

If you think you are in possession of a Qualifying Can Opener:

1. Send us, preferably by e mail, or alternatively by fax or post:

(a) your full business contact details;

(b) a copy of the purchase invoice for your can opener evidencing the price you paid; and

(c) details as to the number and maximum size of cans you open per day.

2. We will then contact you and inform you whether your can openers are Qualifying Can Openers for the purposes of this scheme, and if so, which genuine Bonzer® model will best suit your needs. We will then make arrangements with you for payment and despatch of the genuine Bonzer® can opener.

3. Upon receipt of your new genuine Bonzer® can opener you then send to us the Qualifying Can Opener which has been replaced under this scheme.

You then have the peace of mind of knowing you have a genuine Bonzer® can opener - world famous for quality and rugged dependability.

Why are we offering this?

If there is any threat that our customers or prospective customers might be confused into believing that products originate from Mitchell & Cooper or any other entity that is associated with its iconic Bonzer® can opener or brand, when this is not the case, we will  protect both our brand and our customers vigorously and without quarter. This is particularly the case when the product in question poses potential health and safety risks.

As well as pursuing certain companies selling the similar can opener through legal channels, we are pursuing additional and innovative approaches in the hope that these will enable us to maintain our reputation for manufacturing safe, high quality, dependable products, as well as ensuring that our customers’ interests are well served and their own integrity safeguarded.

Hence this blog and the use of Twitter.

Introducing the Silikomart range of non-stick moulds. Produced with 100% silicone for food use, Silikomart Professional moulds are ideal for the preparation of any recipe, whether sweet or savoury. Light, resistant and practical, they are the best alternative to all other baking moulds and pans produced with other materials.

In fact, they are capable of resisting temperatures of as low as -60°C and as high as +230°C, all of which allows foodstuffs to be taken directly from the freezer to the oven without any change in the characteristics of the material. Pure food safe liquid silicone is not only odourless and taste free, its thermal conduction guaranties the best results for cooking and baking. Its non-stick nature and flexible shape also allow for an easy, speedy and perfect process when demolding, without any loss of time nor ingredients.
The moulds can easily be washed with hot water and a sponge, or in a dishwasher. They occupy very little space: bend them or roll them up, they will always keep their original shape. Their correct use will guarantee a longer lasting use than any other traditional products.
